Grand Bahama Island is the northernmost of the major islands Bahamas. It is located a few kilometers north of the more populated island of New Providence, where the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, is located. The town of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island offers a variety of accommodation options for travelers seeking the peace and serenity of a tropical paradise. A few years ago, a hurricane hit the island and destroyed the islanders' homes and tourism infrastructure. Since the restoration process is not yet complete, you have the opportunity to relax here at a very competitive price. So what is there to do on Grand Bahama Island other than relax on the white sand beaches?
Accommodation on the island
Stay in Freeport, which is much cheaper than staying in nearby Port Lucaya.
Keep in mind that many home and apartment owners rent out their homes during the summer heat, so you can rent for an entire month for the same price you'd pay at a hotel for a week.
Grand Bahama Island hotels
The Westin and Sheraton hotels in Port Lucaya feature casinos, as well as high-end restaurants and shops.
Freeport Resort And Club is located in Freeport and features outdoor tennis courts. This resort offers amenities such as an outdoor pool and a picnic and barbecue area.
Jankanu festival
Come at the beginning of the Christmas holidays - December 26 (Boxing Day) and January 1 during the annual Junkanoo festival. Junkanoo is the official music of the Bahamas and is a distinctive blend of brass band, African and Jamaican reggae music. The people of the Bahamas simply love this music.
Island travel
Rent a car and travel around the island. You can travel around the entire island in one day. Leave Freeport and travel to the West End and then return to the Queens Highway.
Freeport Harbor
Stop at Freeport Harbor, where piles of discarded strombid shells line the road. Ignore the smell and find the nearest café that serves strombid, a Bahamian delicacy. Please note that all cafes here offer dishes from these shellfish.
Dead Man's Reef
Find the best snorkeling spot, usually away from the towns of Freeport and Port Lucaya. At Deadman's Reef you'll find a white sand beach and snorkel rentals.
Lucayan National Park
Visit Lucayan National Park, where you can view the mangrove swamps from the safety of the boardwalk. Mosquitoes attack here in large numbers, but once you pass the mangroves, you will see a beach surrounded by forest with sea of two different colors. Dark water indicates depth, and light blue water rises only 0.5-1 m above the soft sandy bottom.
Entertainment on the island
In the evening, after the day's entertainment, visit Port Lucaya Market Square or Freeport International Bazaar for shopping, entertainment and a pleasant dinner.
