The Commonwealth, located in North America, consists of a main island of the same name, several smaller islands and many reefs. The territory of the central island is one hundred and seventy kilometers long and about sixty kilometers wide. The highest point of the state (1338 m above sea level) is Mount Cerro de Punta. The capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, is located in the northern part of the fabulous island.

It’s a sin to complain about the lack of water resources in Puerto Rico: the Atlantic Ocean washes the northern coast, the Caribbean Sea the southern coast, more than fifty large and shallow rivers, fifteen lakes, none of which are of natural origin.

The state belongs to the United States, but its status as an “unincorporated territory” allows it to have its own legislation and constitution. Closest neighbors are the US Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic.

In “star” restaurants and hotels, it is not customary to tip, since it is already included in the bill - ten to fifteen percent of the total amount. Puerto Rican currency is US dollars, but on local price tags USD can easily be designated as pesos.

It is advisable for tourists to avoid the outskirts - the criminal situation in some areas leaves much to be desired. Although tap water is treated, visitors are advised to drink only bottled water.

Puerto Rico nature

The mesmerizing pristine beauty of nature is another factor that attracts connoisseurs of ecotourism. The humid, hot tropics provide ideal conditions for relict plants - there are more than a hundred species of ferns on the island alone. The El Yunque National Forest, famous for its rich diversity of fauna and flora, has been awarded the status of a biosphere reserve. This is where the living symbols of the state live - small coca frogs. In size, the largest individual of these amphibians rarely reaches five centimeters. The small dimensions are more than compensated for by the deafening singing. On the island you can hear the phrase “hell chant”, referring to amphibians, since even a small “choir” of frogs is similar in decibels to the roar of a supersonic fighter.

Also of interest are the so-called dry tropical forest of Guanica, magnificent coral reefs, fragrant mango groves, roaring waterfalls, a multi-colored limestone cape, and the Camuy cave system.

sights

In addition to gorgeous nature, the island is also rich in historical attractions: the operating Punta Tunu lighthouse, built in the 19th century, the four-hundred-year-old church of Porto Coelha in San Germán, the six-story powerful fortification in El Morro, built several centuries ago to protect against attacks by the Dutch and English conquerors, place of rituals in the Ceremonial Park of Caguana.

Embankment

Modern attractions are not inferior in entertainment to excursions to historical places. The most visited: the large-scale Bacardi plant, which produces world-famous rum, art galleries, museums of Posters, Tobacco, Sports, the Creole Music Center in the New Town of San Juan, the Arecibo Observatory. A flurry of positive emotions is guaranteed from participation in national holidays, music and gastronomic festivals, and visits to salsa schools.
