Grande Terre is comfortably located almost in the very center of the Small Caribbean islands. From the South American coast to the “Mainland” - this is how the name of the resort Eden is translated - about 640 km. To make it clear what place we are talking about, it is enough to remember Guadeloupe, since Grande Terre is one of two islands that, in fact, make up the well-known state.
The territories are separated from each other by the narrow Salt River Strait; the area of Grande-Terre is slightly more than 586 km². Island relative to its neighbor Bas-Ter quite low - in different parts the height of the plateau above sea level ranges from 30 to 135 meters, the territory is considered the lowest part of French Guadeloupe. The dream of travelers is washed by the warm Caribbean Sea, the main city is the port of Pointe-à-Pitre.
Holidays on the Grande Terre
It’s not for nothing that Grande Terre is called the Caribbean Riviera - comfort and excellent service here are at their best. We are pleasantly surprised by the mass of offers designed for any crowd: for single tourists and groups, couples with children, newlyweds, connoisseurs of extreme sports, those who like to have plenty of fun, for those seeking solitude. Every day is busy, bright, unforgettable. There are many resort towns with developed infrastructure on Grande Terre, so choosing a large hotel complex or a secluded hotel near an original village will not be difficult.
It’s easy to combine shopping, spending time on the beach, going to restaurants and casinos here. After an unforgettable air trip, you can take several diving lessons to admire the enchanting underwater kingdom, then rent a yacht for a luxurious picnic away from the shore or exciting fishing. Excursions to historical sites, dancing on the beach and exploring exotic cuisine will complement an already eventful vacation.
The nature of the Grand Ter
The limestone Caribbean island is covered in silver-green cane fields - a flat surface with small hills ideal for growing sugar crops. Exercise in the shade of banana groves fills you with tranquility, and the singing of numerous birds and the sweet-spicy aromas of flowers seem to transport you into a fairy tale.
The view from above is incredibly beautiful: the island’s territory looks like one of the wings of a giant butterfly, landing to rest on the surface of the sea sparkling under the southern sun. The picture is organically complemented by the framing of the shores with lace made of sea foam and corals - nature really did its best in creating such splendor.
Almost the entire coast of Grande Terre has gorgeous beaches, their colors vary from snow-white and golden shades to pink and almost black. Unique coral reefs are the pride of the blessed land, as is the rich underwater world.
Attractions Grande-Terre
There are many places in Pointe-à-Pitre that deserve the attention of tourists: a museum dedicated to the anti-slavery fighter Victor Schoelcher, the stunning Place de la Victoire park with winding alleys under the shade of royal palms and mango trees, a house-museum built in the colonial style, which contains exhibits and personal belongings belonging to the Nobel laureate poet John-Perse. Walking along Rue Bebion and visiting numerous miniature cafes will allow you not only to taste the dishes of different nations of the planet, but also to taste unrivaled scalding rum and coffee brewed according to secret recipes.
A trip to the picturesque village of Gosier is definitely worthwhile. The Aquarium de la Guadeloupe located here is known far beyond the borders of the French colony and is considered one of the best. Turtles, colorful tropical fish, sharks - in total there are more than a thousand species of marine life, which both children and older adults enjoy watching. Near the village there is a miniature clean beach with an old lighthouse. They can be easily reached by renting a real fishing boat.
For only two days a year in mid-August, an unusual festival of fishermen lasts in the village of Saint-François. Tourists are delighted with the festive procession, colorful rituals and spectacular processions, the main purpose of which is to thank the sea elements for the generous catch and requests for further mercy.
When is the best time to go to Grande Terre
The months from February to June are traditionally the most popular for voyages to Grande Terre. Although the air temperature is warm all year round - 25-32˚, summer-autumn hurricanes and tropical heavy downpours are not exactly conducive to a full-fledged beach holiday.
Ideally, it is advisable to plan a tour to both Guadeloupe Islands. However, a trip only to the fabulously original Grande Terre will give you a vacation full of Caribbean positivity and sultry impressions.
