The dominant crops are agave, orange tree, pineapple, and sugar cane plantations.
The main representatives of the animal world are numerous species of lizards and bats; blue and humpback whales are found off the east coast, and Atlantic dolphins are frequent guests. In one of the twenty-five protected areas - the National Park on the island of Inagua - more than 50,000 flamingos found shelter, considered living symbols of the commonwealth.
