Fraser Island is widely known as the largest sand island in the world, which is located off the coast of Australia. Aborigines in ancient times called this island “Kgari”, which translates as “paradise”.

Fraser is named after the Fraser husband and wife. James Fraser is the captain of a ship that was wrecked off the coast of this island. The local aborigines did not accept the members and passengers of the ship and behaved hostilely towards them.
In 1992, the island was recognized by UNESCO as a natural monument, which was documented. This is a unique natural monument that has received the status of a nature reserve.
Geographical location, climate
As mentioned above, Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. Its length reaches 110 kilometers. There are more than a hundred fresh lakes here, the most famous is Lake Bumingen, which is popular among tourists due to its beauty, purity of water and apparent freshness.
The island is also famous for its sand dunes, some of the dunes are more than two hundred meters high.
Geographically, the island is located: in the north – a national park with equatorial forests. In the west there are swamps, in the eastern part there are many sandy beaches.
Flora and fauna of Fraser Island
The flora and fauna of the island is very diverse. The world famous freshwater turtles live here. The island is home to approximately four hundred species of birds. Among them there are also extremely rare ones (for example, the great spine-footed owl).
Among the fauna living here are bats, foxes, opossums, wild dogs Dingo and so on.
During certain seasons, humpback whales can be seen migrating.
What to see on Fraser Island
Of course, the most interesting attraction on the island is its nature. Thanks to the plants and sand dunes, you can trace the centuries-old history of climate change on the island.
It is interesting to look at the Arched Rocks and the Moon Patch - places known among the Aborigines and valued by them.
Tourists also visit Happy Valley. There are parts there that crashed at the beginning of the 20th century. McKenzie Pier and Cathedral Beach are also popular.
